Book Overviews - things to come

This is a very very quick blog update.

I've been wanting to do this for a while but along side my own progress updates for my 3d/ photography I want to now start doing book overviews for art/3d/photography books. These could be guides/how to style books or art portfolio books.

I want to treat these overviews not like reviews but try and explain who these might be most useful for, my favorite sections of the book and maybe even my own goes at techniques shown in the book.

I'll try and gather all these together on a separate page as well so that people can go back to them and check them when available.

The reason for doing this is I think that there are so many options for self learning out there but not all are directly useful if you are wanting to specialise or trying to find a particular route/style in your own progression. I also hope I can show some of the work that inspires me in doing this as over the past few months I got a tonne of awesome art/photography books from true masters of their arts.

I hope these will be beneficial to people and I'll try and get the first one started over the weekend. I'll be starting with books I already own but if people have any book suggestions or want me to cover any particular book please let me know and I'll see if it is possible.

Zbrush: Head crunch and sculpting plans

These shots are from a recent head sculpt/sketch.

There was no reference but the more I worked on the mouth and brow/frown the more I aimed it towards DC character Black Adam. This was done in just under 2 hours from a dynamesh sphere.

I wanted to concentrate on areas around the mouth and the eyelids after watching some basic anatomy sculpting lessons from Ryan Kingslien. I recommend everyone who wants to sculpt sign up here for free to get some basics down.

Plans for sculpting:

I'm currently working on a photobook however I intend to work on a comic bust from scratch. I plan to do Ray Stevenson's version of Frank Castle in the Punisher: Warzone movie just as a comic bust (maybe on top of a Punisher Logo). This is a personal project and I want to note down/show the challenges along the way for other people interested in that area from a relatively new starter approach.

I chose this character simply as the face has strong character to work from and the head and body have a nice clear separation to allow it to be done in chunks easier. The jacket is a relatively basic shape so less work on body anatomy which is good for now.

More info soon anyway!

New Year!

Hope everyone had a great Holiday Season and New Year!

I am starting the new year with more specialisation in mind. I have recently purchased a years subscription to The Gnomon Workshop and carrying on with the Boujou tutorials on there first, as well as referring to Tim Dobbert's great book Matchmoving: The Invisible Art of Camera Tracking

I'm aiming to really specialise in matchmoving this year as not only did I enjoy it at university but like Lighting and Rendering it incorporates a lot of previous photographic techniques learned.

I'm currently working through some little tests with the footage from the book as well as the footage from the Gnomon DVD - Boujou 1: Tracking a Crane Shot

I have the footage still that my workmate shot for me as well which will be excellent for more tests. The advanced lighting and rendering techniques learned in the previous course will help a great deal with final renders and I'll also get some breakdown shots. I'll be uploading progress throughout anyway.

For now here is some a photo I took a while ago but finally got round to editing it. I took it around the time I only really did black and white photography so I thought I'd load it back up from my old memory card and see how it went. Anyway Enjoy!
